Christmas Trees in Heaven

"Did you see any angels?"

"Yes, beautiful snow-white angels;

treeoo3

and I saw long tables spreading far away, farther that I could see, laden with Christmas trees--

treeoo4

--some a blaze of stars, others less brilliant; they were lighted with beautiful bright tiny stars;

treeoo5

angels floated in and out among them, here and there adding a star to a tree, sometimes extinguishing one: when this occurred, the angel next to it became sad and wept.

treeoo1
A smiling angel said to me, pointing to a radiant tree, 'That is yours.' 'But, dear angel,' I asked, 'why are some trees dark without any stars, and some less brilliant than mine?"

treeoo6

The angel answered, 'Every child on earth has a Christmas tree in Heaven, watched by his angel guardian;

treeoo7

whenever the child is good and obedient to his parents and teachers, whenever he is kind to the poor, and whenever he raises his heart in prayer to God, stars are added, giving more lustre;

treeoo9

but if he is idle, disobedient, or uncharitable, a star is extinguished, and then the angel at the dark tree is sad, and weeps his sorrow for the child who is not preparing for Heaven.'

treeoo8

Oh, Edmund, I do feel happy to have a Christmas tree ready in Heaven.

(This story was taken from ‘Three Christmas Trees, 1884)
